The logo of science communications GmbH shows a stylized form of the so-called cup-and-ring markings – one of the oldest symbols of humankind.
The logo embodies our conviction that symbols can communicate values across vast geographical distances, and that despite their long persistence, their meaning often remains hidden from our current knowledge – an exciting field for further research.
These abstract prehistoric petroglyphs are widespread and have been preserved from Sardinia to the Iberian Peninsula and Scotland. In Switzerland, similar signs can be found in the canton of Grisons, in Carschenna near Thusis. The shape is reminiscent of concentric structures such as those of Göbekli Tepe or Stonehenge.

The inspiration for the logo comes from a graphic in the book “The Future of the Past” by Eberhard Zangger (1998). There, each of the four main sections begins with an increasingly complex labyrinth, with the cup-and-ring symbol representing the simplest and oldest form.
The idea to use this symbol as a logo came from Gion Cavelty. The original illustration was created by Oculus Illustrations and later reworked by Bruno Raimondi.
The current version, which has been in use since 2024, was created by the studio of Guido Köhler.
