Billions of mitochondria for life-saving therapies

cellvie AG is working on a method to help patients with severe circulatory disorders through the mass injection of stabilized mitochondria. In an article for the Technopark magazine Einblick, we had the honor to introduce this promising start-up company.

Mitochondria are essential for oxygen uptake and energy conversion in cells, but can be damaged when blood circulation is interrupted, for example in a heart attack, which can lead to cell death. The startup has developed a method to rescue cells after such events by reanimating and replacing dysfunctional mitochondria through transplantation, which has shown promising results in pilot studies.

cellvie is also working on the development of storage-stable mitochondria for broader application that can be easily integrated into the clinical workflow. The goal is to expand the therapeutic options already being developed for heart attack and organ transplant patients. By utilizing mitochondria as a platform technology, the company aims to explore additional areas of application for the transplantation of these cellular components, potentially reaching a wider range of patients.
