A safe space for data collaboration
Decentriq won this year’s Pionierpreis with its “Data Clean Room” concept. Decentriq develops and operates a software platform in the software-as-a-service model. This enables companies and organizations to release sensitive data for external processing while ensuring compliance-compliant use (“sharing without sharing”). We briefly introduced the company in the latest Technopark Magazine Einblick and wanted to go into more detail about its applications and vision.
The cloud-based data clean room platform from Decentriq
A company’s valuable data is usually also particularly sensitive data. In many cases, using this data profitably (e.g. in AI tools) requires multiple parties – often from outside the company – to have access to it. This entails a variety of risks, and this data is usually subject to legal and regulatory requirements.
With its cloud-based Data Clean Rooms, Decentriq offers a secure processing environment for data where it can be encrypted and made available to third parties for analysis and research purposes. Processing takes place exclusively on the protected information so that the cooperating companies do not have access to the raw data at any time. The start-up, which is also a founding member of the Confidential Computing Consortium, relies on new data protection technologies – including chip and cloud technologies from Microsoft, Intel and AMD.
Solutions for complex data problems
Company founders Maximilian Groth (CEO) and Stefan Deml (CTO) previously worked at Zurich-based big data company Teralytics, which specializes in the analysis of mobile data. There they encountered problems that they believed they could solve with new encryption technologies. As a result, they founded Decentriq in 2019 – a start-up that already has an impressive list of customers. Among other things, Decentriq was involved in a Swiss Armed Forces project to strengthen the critical infrastructure of the Swiss financial center.
Decentriq’s long-term goal is to enable companies around the world to work securely with confidential data. It will start where the need is greatest: with data from the healthcare sector and the media. In Maximilian’s words: “Our vision is to make collaboration on sensitive data effortless and secure across all industries. International customers often call us the Switzerland of data because we offer a neutral ground for the data economy. The data world needs more Switzerland.”
